Bears - Charcoal by wren42 Bears - Charcoal by wren42
My latest assignment in digital painting has me doing a lot of abstract art. I'll be making one or two pure-digital versions of this image, but I wanted to lay it out by hand first. Of course, I ended up doing it by hand entirely, and I like how it looks so much that I'm afraid my digital versions won't compare ;) Oh well, I guess that's just the way it goes. This was produced very quickly, so it's not perfect, but I felt like going back and neatening it up would more likely make it worse than better *shrugs*

Just so ya' know, this is a sculpture of two bears climbing a tree (another sketch of this statue can be found here). The sculpture is sitting in the corner of a room. With that knowledge, hopefully the image will coallesce a little! I plan to post a spoiler image which shows each element clearly once I have a digital version.

This is my first experiment with cubism. I quite enjoyed making this piece, I'm very pleased with how it came out, but I'm not sure it would hold up to the strictest cubist standards in a few places ;)

I've never been one to actually SEE things in cubism (Where are the bears?), but I am in awe at the shading you used on the geometric shapes. The scene literally jumps out at you in a wondrous display of light and shadow. It's like a fevered dream, in a way, and I almost half-expect it to move if I stare at it too long.
Wow.

When I saw this IRL, I thought, "I bet I will see that again later. But on the interwebz."

I still really like it. It's expressive.

I really like the design and structure. Nice tones and fine texture. The variation is very good.
